**Mandy Archer** (b. 1967, Colliers Wood). Father a London Transport platform manager; mother later worked at AFC Wimbledon youth team.

**Attendance:** Started c.1976 aged ~10, attending with father and brother; continued until closure in 2005. Followed the team to Eastbourne during the closure, returned when speedway resumed, and brought her own children.

**Family connection:** Both parents had independently attended speedway before meeting; the sport was embedded in the local Colliers Wood community across multiple generations.

**Stadium and atmosphere:** Recalls a full, busy stadium in the 1970s with grandstand, burger bars near the pits, wooden seats, and a fountain in the central green. Crowds declined markedly on the team's return in the lower division. Favoured standing on the back straight; noted the distinctive ethanol-and-shale smell and the louder, noisier bikes of the early era.

**Social life:** Speedway was a central weekly fixture. Made lasting friendships, including through a supporter-run minibus for away trips. Briefly dated a track-grading staff member.

**Riders:** Main favourites were Todd Wiltshire (her "heartthrob," later a champion), Roger Johns (long-serving stalwart), Stingray Morton (large personality), and Bruce Penhall (American "golden boy"; met him in person recently). Also followed Scotty Nichols and, post-closure, Jason Doyle and others.

**Away travel:** Attended meetings across Britain (Coventry, Oxford, Reading, Sheffield, Glasgow) and abroad (Gothenburg, Stockholm, Toruń, Warsaw, Manchester Grand Prix). Cardiff Grand Prix was an annual fixture with son and father.

**Merchandise/media:** Wore a badge-covered jacket; followed the weekly *Speedway Star*. Programs used to score races rather than kept as souvenirs (brother kept his until their mother disposed of them).

**Memorable incidents:** Witnessed serious crashes involving Rudy Marks (collision with unpadded metal post) and Tony Briggs (thrown from bike on second bend); both stick in her memory as the most distressing moments.

**Demographics:** Crowd was multigenerational and fairly gender-mixed; predominantly white British, reflecting the local area. Notes a small "groupie" element given the number of Australian and American riders.

**Decline and closure:** Saddened but unsurprised by the final closure; attributes falling crowds partly to lower-division racing but cannot fully explain the decline. The final night, which also featured stock cars, is her most emotional memory.

**Current involvement:** Attends meetings when possible, choosing fixtures around riders she follows. Her brother now sponsors heats (c.£300) and contributed to the Ronnie Moore statue; Mandy attends the Grand Prix (Manchester, June this year). Notes that Polish speedway now attracts bigger crowds and better rider pay than Britain.
