**Chris "Mad Dog" Pullen** — born 1960 in Merton, local to the stadium. Rode for Wimbledon in 1987–88 (second half/novice level), sponsored by snooker player Jimmy White. First got into speedway as a fan in 1973, with Tommy Anson as his hero. Came up through cycle speedway from 1974 (South London Rangers), which he credits as grounding in track craft. Self-taught as a rider through weekend practice sessions at various tracks. Returned to riding around 2005 after being invited back for a stadium farewell event, and has ridden veterans/blast-from-the-past meetings since. Now owns seven bikes. Key themes covered: the economics of the sport (largely self-funded, contributed to marriage breakdown); relationship with fans (notably the "Pitman Loonies" supporters group); the rivalry with Hackney; race-day nerves and tactics; safety equipment and changing riding styles; the physicality of riding; and the dangers of the sport (lost a teammate to a fatal crash in 1987, has known around five riders killed over his career). Nickname "Mad Dog" coined by a friend in the 1980s and adopted by the fanbase. Known for crowd interaction and humour. One internal rivalry with teammate Rodney Payne. Describes the stadium fondly — covered seating all round, pits under the grandstand — and found its closure hard given his lifelong connection to it for speedway, greyhounds and stock cars.
