Settlement Stories

Stories of Migration

We were approached by a small West London based community group call ‘African Women’s Group’ to help them set up and run an intergenerational heritage project. The idea was to work with the generation of women who were born in the UK, to teach them oral history interviewing and recording skills, which would enable them to conduct interviews with the older generation who have moved here from Sudan, Eritrea and Ethiopia.

We had a lovely group of volunteers who with whom we ran workshops both to teach oral history interviewing and recording skills and to consider themes to explore through the interviews and questions to ask with their curiosity and experiences leading the way.

The resulting interviews are wonderful, one generation exploring the untold stories of their elders. These life stories illuminate the experiences of people who have come to live here, and just how varied these stories are. We worked with the team to edit these interviews into a series of podcasts that you can listen to here.

For this project we also worked closely with Westminster Archives who have received the full interviews into their collection.
